The expression \u201cthe icing on the cake\u201d as far as I know means something extra and unexpected in addition<\/em> to something else which you already knew you were going to get anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It\u2019s like the icing on the cake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Except it isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because when somebody orders a piece of cake they already know full well that they\u2019re also going to get the icing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It\u2019s just a part of cake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So getting icing on your cake isn\u2019t really anything special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It\u2019s merely a part of what makes cake so special to begin with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So it isn\u2019t really the icing on the cake at all, you see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Now, if you ordered a piece of cake and they unexpectedly also brought you a free scoop of ice cream with it, now that would be something special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n THAT would be the icing on the cake.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" I was just reading a news article where they used the expression \u201cit\u2019s like the icing on the cake\u201d.
